Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) recently celebrated its 17th convocation ceremony at its campus in Seri Iskandar, Perak.

The ceremony saw 1,250 of its students graduate with 96 being conferred with PhDs and 110 with master’s degrees. 1,044 students were conferred bachelor’s degrees in the fields of science, engineering and technology.

In his speech, UTP pro-chancellor Tan Sri Sidek Hassan said graduates could attain success with the right attitude and focus.

Advising students that having a career was equivalent to running a marathon, Sidek said: “My advice to you is to take charge and plan your career carefully.”

“Just as in a marathon, your ultimate goal is to complete. So, in your career, determine what your ultimate goal is.

“The second point is to make that journey comfortable. If you sprint too early in a marathon, you might not be able to complete.

The third point he said was for them to be open to adjustments from the many lessons that you will learn along with your journey,” he added.

He advised the graduates to practice the positive values that the university had inculcated in them, such as integrity and accountability.

“In the workplace, there will be many choices between doing what is right, and what is wrong.

“Remember that we are accountable for our actions,” he said, advising the graduates to also give their best in everything they do.

Business Information Systems graduate Farah Iliyana Mohd Noor was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Award, while Khairul Anuar (Petroleum Engineering) and Phua Yun Hock (Chemical Engineering) received the silver and bronze award respectively.

Tareq Aziz Hasan Al-Qutami, an MSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate from Yemen, received the Alumni Postgraduate Award at the Master’s level, while Hamayoun Mahmood, a PhD in Chemical Engineering graduate from Pakistan, was the recipient of the Alumni Postgraduate Award at the PhD level.

Information and Communication Technology graduate Mohamad Ali Hajian Maleki of Iran, was awarded the Best International Undergraduate Student award.

Also present at the event were UTP vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim, ITPSB Board of Directors and representatives from other universities.

Various events were organised in conjunction with the convocation ceremony.

UTP Acadrex is an event that features the university’s academic and research exhibition.

There was also an innovation challenge competition and a Government-University-Industry forum, as well as a roundtable titled: ‘The Future of Malaysia under the 4th Industrial Revolution’.

The findings and outcomes from the roundtable were later presented to Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Datuk Wira Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah.

The varsity also held various corporate social responsibility activities in conjunction with its convocation ceremony such as the Convo Ride, Convo Run, Convo Kayak Exploration, Convo CSR Charity Ride 2017. Its main objective in holding the events was to collect funds to help the underprivileged.
