This book provides a guide to learning to play the viola at a basic level using Malay children’s folk songs from Sarawak, Sabah, Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Sembilan (all states in Malaysia).

Twenty select, easy-to-remember songs have been transposed and facilitated for you to perform on the viola. The songs were adjusted in sequence steps to enable you to acquire basic beginner skills in playing on the viola.

In addition, each song is supported with an étude created from that specific song’s content and converted into an exercise for strengthening playing proficiency.

Furthermore, to encourage self-practice and facilitate learning progress, each song and étude is equipped with audio and video demos (accessed via links) and a piano accompaniment track backing the song. This book begins by getting you acquainted with basic information on the alto clef, viola, and bow and advice on viola care that every violist should know.

We express our profound gratitude to Mohd. Hassan Abdullah, Mohd. Nizam Hj. Nasrifan, Mahayuddin Abd. Rahim, and Nor Azman Mohd. Ramli for providing the Malay children’s folk songs used in this book.

Goals/Objectives

In this book, we provide novice viola students with foundational skills in self-practice and self-discipline, enabling them to play melodies with accurate pitches by practicing simple Malay children's folk songs. The included etudes, designed with specific note values and rhythmic combinations, aim to develop students' rhythmic proficiency and hand coordination through additional practice. Playing familiar tunes enhances confidence and facilitates comfort with reading music in alto clef. Additionally, learning unfamiliar melodies allows students to appreciate the beauty of Malay folk music. The book includes video and audio instructions, simulating a personal viola coach to guide students in visualizing and hearing each note and rhythm pattern.
