This advanced module aims to provide students with additional knowledge on instrumental techniques used in material testing and characterisation. The course covers a wide range of instruments, including XRD, XRF, SEM, NMR, Mass Spectrometer, and DMTA. One of the key focuses, especially for materials like polymers, is the structural elucidation achieved through interpreting spectra from mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The course also includes thermal and morphological analysis. These aspects provide valuable insights into material properties and behavior. The module places great importance on hands-on learning, with laboratory sessions playing a vital role. Here, students get practical experience in handling instruments, setting up experiments, analysing data, and applying the techniques to materials testing. These related experiments are thoughtfully designed to deepen the students' understanding of the underlying principles and foster practical skills for characterising materials effectively.
